ICO Review: NOIA – P2P Content Delivery Network

After looking through 42 token sale announcements, we’re picking NOIA Network as our ICO of the Day. NOIA is a P2P Content Delivery Network.

Premise

4.5/5 – Excellent

Today’s internet is larger, more global, and more diverse than ever. We have over 3 billion users online, traffic is spread across all parts of the world, and we are delivering more types of traffic – from web applications to video to audio – than ever before.

Live internet stats show that the internet handles several exabytes(one exabyte is one million terabytes, each of which is a thousand gigabytes) of data a day. That’s a LOT of data.

To handle this load and deliver it quickly no matter where in the world users are, the modern internet uses Content Delivery Networks – CDNs, which are like local caching servers. If you’re a user in Japan looking at a Youtube video made in America, chances are you are not looking at the original video file on a server in america, but a cached copy on a local server in Asia. This both reduces the load on the origin server and gives you a better experience.

Today these CDN’s are getting better and better, but they’re still not perfect. The CDN companies and servers are relatively centralized, and their capacities are not scaling as fast as our content needs are growing.

NOIA Network aims to change this by using ordinary users’ spare computing and network capacity to turn regular computers into decentralized CDN servers. This P2P CDN network would be geographically distributed so any user would have a geographically close server for fast loading times. Content servers would be rewarded in cryptocurrency. Just like Uber lets us use our unused vehicle capacity, and AirBnB lets us rent out our spare room, NOIA lets us earn money for unused compute.

NOIA Network’s premise is very much needed, and it’s a natural usage of cryptocurrencies. The whitepaper is well written and thought out, from both technical, economic, and business perspectives.

Team

4/5 – Very Good

NOIA Network has a very strong technical team, including developers from Skype, dropbox and an architect with direct experience in DevOps(closely related to content delivery) and CDN.

The business leadership is not quite as strong, with scattered experience in financial and tech sectors, however we didn’t see any major red flags. As the project has a moderate scope, we see them as capable as leading the project to success.

Token

3/5 – OK

The NOIA token is used to pay for bandwidth on the network. It will be locked at 1 NOIA  = 5GB of traffic. To deal with price fluctuations, network pricing will be denoted in fiat terms, so NOIA token price surges or dips will not affect pricing.

45% of all tokens will be sold for a hard cap of $36,000,000 USD. This is an average price and float.

Risks

4/5 – Very Good

NOIA Network faces the challenges of competing with the existing CDN ecosystem, as well as other CDN ICOs. To deal with the existing CDN ecosystem, NOIA aims to allow for being not just a replacement, but also a layer on top. This would for instance, give businesses a way to emergency-scale, or serve regions their existing CDNs do not.

In addition, NOIA’s infrastructure is designed to be more efficient and thus ore competitively priced, meaning their offerings should be significantly cheaper than current CDN solutions.

NOIA also faces competition from simliar ICOs, such as Theta Token. From what we can tell, NOIA has a stronger technical team than most of its competitors, but since CDNs benefit from a network effect, this could be negated if its competitors move quicker to build customers and industry partnerships.

Summary

NOIA is a very promising ICO with a strong premise and strong technical team that solves a real problem. There are some risks to this one, but overall this is the kind of ICO we like to highlight – a solid project that focuses on building a good foundation instead of putting 90% of its efforts into marketing and 10% into development.

That being said, hype is important in the ICO space and NOIA is relatively unhyped at the moment. We can forgive that for the moment as its only just been announced, but we hope to see more people hear about this project and spread the word.
